Fuel Economy Estimates

How to save up on gas mileage while driving your dream car

Fuel Economy

Fuel Economy—Paul Garland (Flickr.com)

Love your SUV? Who wants to take the bus anymore anyway? We all like the comfort of our car when getting from place to place. But there is that one little glitch of rising gas prices. If you asked a random expert on how to save money on gas, they would give you the obvious answer of using your car less and less and using methods like car pooling, using the bus more often or walking. But that is not the answer we look for is it?

Fuel Economy

What we need to know is how to save money on fuel while continuing to use our vehicles. Sure, we want better fuel economy from our next vehicle, if that's possible. In the meantime, here are a few tips that we can use to save money on fuel and increase gas mileage.

The easiest and best way to save fuel and thus save time, frustration and money, is to plan your day. By having a proper plan for your day that lists down what errands you need to run you can plan the best route to take to get all your work done in one go. This will give you the best roads to take and what roads to avoid in times of heavy traffic and will give you a basic idea of your fuel economy estimates. After a while, not only will you realize that planning saves a lot of time, but also that as you use the best routes to your destinations you will save dollars from your improved vehicle mpg.

The use of a GPS can come in quite handy as well, but don't fall into the trap of letting the gizmo do the thinking for you. You need to use your brain as well, and be ready to override the thing if you know a better route.

If you're thinking that you need to change your car, hybrids are the way to go these days. Hybrid vehicles now come in all shapes and sizes. So you need not downgrade your SUV to a smaller hybrid car, but can upgrade to a new hybrid SUV which comes with the latest technology and gadgets. A hybrid car does many more miles per gallon than a conventional car. If you feel that you cannot afford a hybrid and live in a highly urban area, a less expensive choice is a car with automatic shifting than manual transmission, since shifting gears when you are stuck in traffic definitely uses up more gas. And we want you to save gas.

Other Ways to Save Gas

What if you have no intention whatsoever in changing your car? There are still simple and foolproof methods of increasing your gas mileage while driving your dream car. The first one of these, as any mechanic and car aficionado will tell you is proper maintenance. One cannot simply overemphasize the importance of proper maintenance of a vehicle. This means the timely servicing of your car as specified by the car manufacturer and changing engine oil and oil filter at the specified time among others.

What else can you do to maintain your car in a tip-top condition and get better gas mileage? Well, you can fine-tune the engine, maintain proper tire pressure, use the proper grade of motor oil, replace your air filters when needed and balance and align your vehicle's wheels. A car is like any other machine. Maintaining it in supreme condition will help it run at an optimum efficiency, meaning that you will get better vehicle mpg than someone with a poorly-maintained car.

Further Tips to Save Fuel

What can you do to maintain high miles per gallon while you're driving? One thing is to drive nice and smoothly. Not only will your passengers, if any, complain of nausea and motion sickness but you will also burn up more gas if you drive aggressively. If you're driving on the highway, stick to the posted speed limits and cruise... And if you're in traffic, try to anticipate your next stop ahead of time rather than having to brake suddenly. Any sudden movements such as starting up quickly and sudden braking consume more gasoline and hinder your fuel economy, as does driving with a 'lead foot' on the accelerator pedal.

If you have a cruise control facility in your car, don't be afraid to use it. Driving in the proper lane also helps you save gas as there is a continuous flow of traffic.

Sometimes, when we have a passenger in the car and we need to run to the drug store, we tend to leave the car with the engine running. While we don't realize it, any amount of time that the engine is working it's burning up gas. When you stop the car, switch off the engine.

Do you also have everything from extra clothes to garden tools in the trunk of your car? Remove them immediately. The weight of your car is directly related to drag and more weight means less miles per gallon. Also if the surf board or bicycle from your last trip is still on the roof of your car, take it off as they hinder the aerodynamics of your car.

These are only a few things that you can do to improve the gas mileage of your car. A combination of these will definitely help you with your fuel economy estimates.

Get More Mpg for Your Car With Simple Devices That Improve Fuel Economy

Let's face it the way things are going it doesn't look like the price of fuel is going to drop anytime soon. In fact it looks like things are going to get a lot worse. With this in mind many drivers are on the lookout for devices that improve fuel economy and help them get more MPG for their vehicles (whether that be cars, trucks or SUVs).

For those who can afford it, trading in their existing vehicle for a more fuel efficient model,( as most newer vehicles get more MPG than an older one would) or one of the new Hybrid cars seems to be the way to go. However the majority of us, who's budget doesn't stretch to a new car will have to rely on devices that improve fuel economy to get more MPG from their old bangers.

During this fuel crisis (as in any crisis) you will get people coming up with scams and schemes to relieve you of your hard earned cash. Scams claiming to have the latest gadgets that will get you the highest MPG from any car or vehicle. Sadly most of these gadgets are shams or myths, some of which have been around for years and are just now popping up again with a new lease of life thanks to the internet.

  2. QUESTION:
What should I do to increase fuel economy on a road trip.?
Besides using cruise control, inflating my tires (nitrogen w/ fairly new Michellen Tires). The spark plugs, coil pack, spark plug wires, are relatively new using OEM parts. Up to date oil change, new serpentine belt. The Air Filter, and various sensors are pretty clean. No Check engine light. Do Fuel Additives help? Any tips? It's an older high mileage minivan, in great condition.
It's a good 8 1/2 hour drive non stop. 75mph. average. It's made the trip a few times before
Also the Antifreeze was changed about 4 months ago.
I have NuFinish but I am not a fan.
The Nitrogen was free, with my tire installation, I also get free fill ups and balancing/rotations every 7.5k miles.

  3. QUESTION:
MECHANICS: Is sea-foam a good Fuel cleaner/ additive?
I have a 2006 Chrysler 300 3.5L V-6 55,000 miles. I use a bottle of sea foam about every 4 months to help clean the carbon and grime that this ethanol they put inour fuel will deposit. Is this a good/ great fuel aditive or am I buying something that is made for older engines, outboard engines, etc... I understand that Sea-Foam has been around since the 40's -- Seems like this stuff might be a little harsh.

Any suggestions of what kind of cleaner/ additive I should use, how often, and if it is necessary at all.

By the way I do see a slight increase in fuel mileage for the tank and 1 or 2 subsequent tanks... I just dont know if its cleaning or just octane boosting.

    • ANSWER:
sea foam is excellent at stabilizing fuel and protecting engines in storage it also cleans carbon deposits actually the ethanol in gas cleans injectors etc not add to the carbon it will not harm your engine and if you are seeing noticable results i would not worry about using it

  4. QUESTION:
    any pointers to save fuel?
i would like to know any ways i can higher my fuel mileage in my 19 subaru imprezza awd, anything would help, oh and does running the heater use gas, i dont have ac, and what other electronics may increase gas consumption. is there ne fuel additives i could add to my car to make it more fuel efficient, like i will be trying injector cleaner, hope that helps me, but can you!

    • ANSWER:
Lower weight, increase air/fuel ratio to better suit your conditions. Keep tire pressure to the the right psi. Change your oil when manufacturer recommends. I dont think that using the heater cause loss of fuel, as engines do run better on cooler denser air.

Can you drive a moped that is 50cc or lower when you are 15 in wisonsin or drive a electric vehicle?
im turning 15 soon and i want to way to get around town and go to my job. I was wondering if you could get a electric vehicle or gas vehicle that i could drive

    • ANSWER:
An electric vehicle or moped is a motor vehicle and is subject to all the laws and exceptions governing motor vehicles in your state. To discover what those laws are you can look here: http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/ or give DMV a call.

  2. QUESTION:
Courses and Jobs in alternative vehicle fuel engineering?
I can't find any courses in alternative automotive power sources engineering such as electric cars (Tesla manufacturer). Just now I'm on 1st year of a degree in electrical engineering and think it might be interesting to get into such a field so where are the opportunities?

    • ANSWER:
Your best option is to find a school that is working on building an alternative fueled vehicle. A place to start is with recent submissions for the automotive X prize. Several schools submitted entrants an those are the schools you should be looking into. Another alternative are the schools that submit and race vehicles in either the American Solar Challenge or the World Solar Challenge. Last of course you can google for alternative car building schools.

Often it is an interdisciplinary approach that builds the vehicles. Such hands on experience will be great for not only deciding upon your future but in meeting people in the field and for future job applications.

  3. QUESTION:
Will the new parking meters in chicago have electric outlets to recharge the new electric vehicles.?
Sweetheart deal to sell/lease the parking meters of chgo. New form of racism, no jobs, no citizen input, a done dummy deal.

    • ANSWER:
      1) No, and if they did have eletricial outlets you can be sure the city would charge you extra for that.

      2) Racism has nothing to do with the parking meter deal. How can it? It affects everyone, not one particular race. What, only black people drive downtown and try to park? It's about the dollars, pure and simple. The only color that comes into play here is green.

  4. QUESTION:
what kind of electric motor is capable of driving a 24v 300amps heavy duty alternator?
how many horse power is needed to run a 24v 300amps alternator?
can a 220v electric motor can do the job?aside from using a vehicle engine or combustion engine to run the alternator is there any other way to run it?

    • ANSWER:
I would go to the alternator manufacturer's website and look up your alternator to see what typical applications it is used for. Then see what type of power is needed to run it. One question is whether it has to be able to start up from scratch under full load and whether it's a continuous duty application. You know a vehicle engine may run about 2,000 RPM at high idle, so try any motor that puts out multi-horsepower to run it and see if the circuit breaker trips during continuous operations.

  5. QUESTION:
will more war spending get more jobs or just more debt?
seems like the toys are getting more expensive ,but because 60 percent of the economy is war based it seemed to be win win ,
but who pays in the end
have we ever repaid any war debt in full
just thought with global warming now could be a good time to ban petrol and go for full on electric vehicles
think of the jobs , think of the money
    petrol industry is killing us
its lobby is causing wars to monoplilies the oil ,our children are dying in deserts
oil money in us dollars is just buying us war weopens ,great future we got before us if peace is ever declaired
    fat chance that eh.

    • ANSWER:
They are messing up. The largest export of the USA is military materiel.

What country are you in? The USA doesn't have war debts, the accounting is different, because we finance our military expenditures from within the country, and yes, the old war bonds were paid off, but there may be a few out there that haven't been redeemed.

EDIT: US Military expenditures are financed through general treasury bonds and debt securities, not specific war bonds, and there is no good accounting for how much a war really costs. Before the war, we were spending an average of per barrel in military and foreign aid expenditures to maintain stability and keep the price of oil down, which would have been better applied to developing alternative energy sources. END EDIT

We have never BEEN repaid a war debt in full.

America really became great by staying out of the Great War and WWII until later, and selling materiel to our allies directly, and indirectly to our enemies, but that is an entirely different subject. Yes we were paid for most of that materiel, but we weren't completely paid for that junk we sent over at an inflated price under the lend-lease program.

Part of the reason the present wars are being fought is to inflate the price of oil, and increase oil company profiteers. That is an obscure branch of economics, and I don't care to take thirty pages to explain it here. A lot of factors play into fear of shortages, and a fixed percentage of co-production agreements, and hedge contracts that turn out to be phenomenally profitable for certain people.

Electric Cars? Good idea, but the big auto companies are locomotives, and it is difficult to change paths now, and they have serious internal problems, most especially with the legacy costs of insurance and retirement, which has been dramatically compounded by the exhorbitant inflation of the cost of medical care. Perhaps you have heard of a company that produces the Tesla car. It is an electric, designed by computer whizzes in Palo Alto, and at 0,000, can outrun a Porsche Turbo or a Ferrari Modena. It is a little crude in the interior, but quantities of scale could dramatically improve costs, quality and amenities.

Yes, war will get Both more jobs AND more debt, but what everyone seems to be overlooking, is that we have been experiencing a dramatic devaluation of the dollar relative to other countries, and that will get worse as we increase our debt load.

Ordinarily I sign off with Good Luck, but we need more than good luck in this situation, we need some serious non-partisan dialog to not only address these problems, but to fix the health care crisis, the educational crisis, and the quality of life crisis in the USA. Regardless of any nationalistic fantasy, the USA is not in the top twenty of developed nations in any of those three categories.

I guess we got to get to work, first by finding the facts and determining exactly where we are, and developing solutions to the challenges the USA is currently facing.

      Sorry this was so long.

How To Build Your Own Electric Vehicle

With the high price of gas these days, many consumers have decided that owning and driving an electric vehicle will be more efficient and cheaper to run over the long haul. If you decided to build your own electric vehicle, there are plenty of resources available to help you understand and work through the process of converting a gas vehicle into an electric vehicle.

If you are one of those unfortunate souls that have to commute a long ways back and forth to work, an electric vehicle may not suit your needs because on average these vehicles run from 30 to 70 miles each day. Other factors such as the driving conditions, the weight of the vehicle and the quality of the battery will determine how many miles you can drive. You also have to consider how you will be recharging the batteries. If you live in your own home with a garage, then charging the batteries is not a problem. However, if you live in an apartment complex with no garage, it maybe a little tougher to charge the batteries every night.

Some Important Considerations

First thing you have to consider is what type of car you want to use to build your own electric vehicle. Smaller cars would be more ideal, but bigger cars can be used as well. You should also consider using a car that has a manual four speed or five speed transmission, since standards are more efficient than automatics. Interestingly, since electric motors are so deficient, shifting gears up and down constantly won't happen as much as it does in a gas fueled engine.

When building your own electric vehicle, there will be additional weight added to your car. That weight can be anywhere from 200 to 500 extra pounds. Just make sure that the car you picked can handle the extra weight with the modifications and isn't completely ridiculous and is well within reason.

A few more things to keep in mind that are optional when building your electric vehicle is the power steering and air-conditioning. The power steering would definitely require another motor to make the power steering pump work. The air conditioning will put a huge drain on the batteries, but you can hookup the air conditioning using a special magnet system to work the compressor.

In the end, there are plenty of resources out there to help you do the job right when building your own electric vehicle. As time passes and with the rising cost of fuel, electric vehicles and hybrids will become more and more popular. Chances are the price of gas is going to continue to rise and for a lot of people, gas is almost not affordable. So going ahead and take a look at building your own electric vehicle; you may be surprised at how easy it is to convert your gas guzzler into and electric vehicle. The money you will save on fuel will pay for the cost of the conversion in very short order and there will be less pollution in the air too.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How much do gas prices have to rise before you buy an electric vehicle or find another means of transportation
What are you driving for everyday use? How much does it get per gallon?

    • ANSWER:
I drive a Chevy Trailblazer. I'm not sure how much it gets per gallon, but lasts a while. I also don't drive it daily. My hubby drives his motorcycle to work, which gets excellent gas mileage (about every week and a half).

I'll buy an electric vehicle if they ever make a Trailblazer hybrid and it's affordable.

Fuel Mileage By Truck

Jeep Top Truck Challenge Mileage Chart 1 Photo 1

Top Five Trucks for Gas Mileage

A few years ago, people would scoff at you if you told them that you were looking for trucks with the best gas mileage. But, as truck sales began to sl 00004000 ip downwards, manufacturers started giving due importance to this factor. Today, there has been a dramatic change in the scenario.

The rising costs of gas, has propelled potential truck buyers to go for trucks that can meet their gas mileage demands. Truck makers have now taken firm steps to improve the fuel economy of their makes at all levels.

Usually the ranking of the top five trucks based on gas mileage is founded on a combination factors. The prime parameters are the fuel economy rating given by EPA, the transmission of the vehicle, and its inherent popularity amongst car buyers. The formula for calculation for most gas mileage rankings is a combination of the city mpg rating, which forms 55 percent of criterion, and the highway mpg rating that completes the remaining criteria.

It is really very difficult to bring forth a list that enumerates the top 5 trucks on the basis of fuel efficiency. Not one, not two, but three trucks hold the first rank. This spot is shared by the 2006 Ford Ranger one of the premier trucks that are out in the market today. Ford has made it a point to come out with trucks that offer the best gas mileage. This is why most of their newer models find a place on the best gas mileage list year after year.

what is the most fuel efficient truck that you can by in America?
I am looking to by a truck with great gas mileage and i need help finding one

    • ANSWER:
Honda Ridgeline, followed by Toyota Tacoma.

  2. QUESTION:
Can anyone tell me what useful purpose it serves to 'lift' a 4x4 pickup truck?
I have owned dozens of 4x4 vehicles over the years and never needed anything more than stock ride height for driving in snow and extreme weather conditions, as well as off-road service and towing.

As I see it, all you are doing by 'lifting' a truck is raising the center of gravity and screwing up the handling capabilities of the truck, decreasing fuel mileage and making it less safe to operate on public roadways.

    • ANSWER:
Get your puppy ass off the porch and come run with the big dogs and you will see why stock ride height doesn't cut it. That's fine if YOU never needed any lift. My daily driver is an '08 silverado and its stock but when it comes to the play toys a gravel road does not constitute off-road. Have you seriously never buried a truck in the mud to the frame?

Some diesel vehicle do not seem to be allowed in California for some reason ( small displacement diesel cars , trucks or vans ).

What are the highest gas / fuel milage MPG vehicles available in california.
I am not interested in a new vehicle unless it is by far the highest mpg. I am not interested in safety JUST miles per gallon. And I am not really interested in hybrid.

  4. QUESTION:
Fuel mileage better or worse on new cars?
I currently own a 2002 Toyota Solara SLE V6 convertible. In the past I have owned three 1969 Cadillac Deville convertibles, a 1970 Oldsmobile 98 LS, several Lincolns Dodge vans and F-350 pick up trucks. Not what you would consider economy vehicles. The worst (fuel economy wise) got 16 miles per gallon (Dodge van), the best (this was one of the Caddys) got 22. Now if a behemoth, 6000 pound, monster motor, highway cruiser can get that kind of fuel mileage, why does a 3500 pound, popcorn fart powered Japanese POS only get 17 mpg? By the way, this is my first Toyota and definitely my LAST Toyota.

    • ANSWER:
There is no way that caddy got 22mpg... eighteen if you let it coast downhill. There might be something wrong with the solara i dont really like that car but it should at least reach the 28 to 31 mpg... have someone check out the solar i am sure toyota will feel the one customer that left them.

  5. QUESTION:
Increase fuel mileage 20% and GM appproved it...so where is it?
A British firm has developed a new form of automatic transmission that it says can cut fuel consumption on SUVs and trucks by 20 percent when compared with a conventional automatic gearbox.

The company, Torotrak, says that the cost of its Infinitely Variable Transmission is comparable to a conventional auto box, and it is looking for an American company interested in building the units for sale to American manufacturers. GM has already tested the Torotrak system and approved it, and although the company is not prepared to build the transmissions itself, it would be prepared to look at proposals from any of its Tier 1 component suppliers who were prepared to undertake manufacture of the gearboxes.

The Torotrak transmission differs from a conventional automatic in that it has no torque converter. The torque converter transfers the drive from the engine to the gearbox by means of a fluid coupling that takes the place of the mechanical clutch used in manual transmissions. The fluid allows the drive from the engine to "slip" while the car is at rest or while shifts are being made, thus making it unnecessary to disengage the drive using the clutch.

Pretty amazing...this revolutionary product has been around since 2002!

    More Info: http://www.thecarconnection.com/Auto_News/Daily_Auto_News/Torotrak_The_Next_CVT.S173.A5029.html

    • ANSWER:
da vinchi came up with the idea for CVT a long time ago, used in some cars in the 80's. redeveloped in 2002. still not better then what's currently used. often weights more, has a limited life, special lubricant that costs more, extra mantinance required, special mecanics are needed to work on the CVT.

(I've heard that there is a bike called the da vinchi that uses da vinchi's CVT design)

all in all it costs more over the life of the car then the gas savings. (someday that might change...just not yet)

Ac Motor Electric Vehicle

dot ac motor electric vehicle products, buy dot ac motor electric ...

The Difference Between AC And DC Electric Motors.

There are two main types of electric motors. There are direct current or DC and alternating current or AC motors. The reference of DC or AC refers to how the electrical current is transferred through and from the motor. Both types of motors have different functions and uses. Dc motors come in two general types. They can have brushes or be brushless. AC motors, as well, come in two different types. They can be two phase or three phase. The differences in DC and AC motors are sometimes subtle, but these differences are what make one types better for a certain use.

Direct current or DC electric motors work for situations where speed needs to be controlled. DC motors have a stable and continuous current. DC motors were the first and earliest motors used. They were found, however, to not be as good at producing power over long lengths. Electric companies found using DC motors to generate electric did not work because the power was lost as the electric was transmitted. Brush DC motors use rings that conduct the current and form the magnetic drive that powers the rotor. Brushless DC motors use a switch to produce the magnetic drive that powers the rotor. Direct current motors are often found in appliances around the home.

Alternating current or AC electric motors are used differently based on what type of AC motor it is. Single phase AC motors are known as general purpose motors. They work well in many different situations. These AC motors work great for systems that are hard to start because they need a lot of power up front. Three phase, also called polyphase, AC motors are usually found in industrial settings. These motors also have high starting power built transmit lower levels of overall power. AC power gets its name from the fact that it alternates in power. The amount of power given off by an AC motor is determined by the amount of power needed to operate the system.

DC and AC electric motors are found everywhere from the home to the car to industrial plants. Motors are important to everyday life. Dc motors were introduced and caused a great revolution in the way many things are done. When AC motors came on the market the way motors were looked at changed because of their amazing starting power potential. DC motors and AC motors are different in many ways, but they still both are usede to power the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How does one run an AC motor in reverse?
I am thinking about an electric vehicle conversion. I want to remove the transmission, as the rotation of the motor is enough. Here comes the problem though: how do I reverse? It will be a variable frequency drive, and I am planning on mounting it directly on the axle (well like where the bar that connects the axle with the transmission used to be.

Also would the rotation of the motor be enough or will I need to add some permanent gears?

    • ANSWER:
A rear differential has about a 3:1 drive ratio. It would basically be like the highest gear in the transmission all the time.

You actually can do that with electric, but acceleration would be slower.

For reverse, just use a controller that has a reverse function.

  2. QUESTION:
    Making my own electric vehicle?
So i want to make an electric car, AC powered.
    What are the essential things?
Price it will probably come out to?
Good and not so expensive motor? (been searching but need some help.)
    Thank you

    • ANSWER:
There are probably several ways to make an electric car. Ones that come to mind are:

convert a gas car to electric
assemble an electric kit car of which there are several
start from the ground up and build a new vehicle.

How you proceed depends upon the approach you take and there are companies that will do most or all of the work for you. Your budget may make some of the decisions for you. If it is severely limited you might consider an electric bike as a first project. An electric velomobile might give you more of the car feel at less of an expense. A conversion project can be done cheaply (1) but might cost you 5 to 15,000 or more. A kit car can also be very costly (2) but you may need to add another zero when building an electric car from scratch.

My Jeeps electric fan isnt turning on when the AC is turned on.. Need help?
Hello guys, i have a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 120k miles, and its got a 5.9 Liter v8 engine. It has a electric 2 speed fan on it.

I was told the electric fan has to come on when the airconditioner turns on, yet mine does not come on at all. It only turns on low speed when my engine reaches 200f. I jumped the high and low speed fan switch on the radiator hoses to make sure the high and low speed motor was still working and it is. The relays both clicked on when i did it so it isnt the fan or the relays i dont think.

I know this vehicle has a AC pressure switch and I was told when you turn the AC on the pressure switch grounds the wire and turns the fan on. If this is the case then my pressure switch is probably bad ? How would i go about checking this ?

It sounds like the motor on the fan needs to be replaced. This is a fairly inexpensive task.
