Electric Car Windows

How to Repair Electric Car Windows

A Synopsis of Car Electric Windows

Car electric windows, also known as electric windows are automobile windows which can be raised and lowered by merely pressing a button or a switch, as compared to using the old hand-turned crank handle. Owning a vehicle that comes standard with power windows is definitely more practical and convenient to say the least. You just need to remember some automotive jargons that make such car electric windows operate. For instance, consider the term window regulator, power windows are installed with regulators that enable the windows to go up and down when activated. The window regulators work by simply converting the rotary action of the motor into a vertical and linear motion of the power windows.

However, what if your window regulator stops working? Would you settle for public transport and leave your ride in the garage simply because the power window isn't working? The car electric window, just like any other mechanical moving part does break down overtime. You may encounter slow upward or downward movement, falling off the track, rising just halfway up, not fully closing, or simply not moving up or down. These are all telltale signs that your car electric window requires a bit of repair and maintenance. Having a faulty power window can be annoying at times. Say for instance that the window regular becomes stuck and does not allow the window to open. You'll have trouble paying at toll booths or even getting your order from a drive-thru fast food chain, or in case you need some fresh air in the event that your air conditioning unit also bogs down.

Such scenarios are perhaps one of the biggest driving headaches a driver would encounter. Fortunately, car manufacturers have come up with more durable and reliable units. Moreover, there is wide range of replacement regulators, buttons/switches, motors and other parts that are available at your car dealer and even in aftermarket car shops to get your back in working order.
A word of caution though, make sure you bring your car to a reputable shop or mechanic so you won't get robbed with a simple replacement of a malfunctioning part of your power window assembly.

The best way to prevent such type of problem is to go online and look for replacement parts. There are scores of online auto parts shops that offer car electric window parts at an affordable cost, but that does not necessarily mean that you get substandard quality. There are lots of online shops that offer OEM parts of high quality. They also provide quality service at reasonable prices. There are even times when you can perform minor repairs so you can minimize repair expenditure. You can consult manuals and get hold of the appropriate tools needed - which in most cases include screwdrivers, a 10 mm or 12 mm socket and a wrench. By carefully following the repair instructions, and with a little tweak here and there, you can have your car electric window functioning in no time.

My drivers side window shakes when you play the radio, vibrates and rattles when you close the door when down. Any advice gratefully received!
When the window is closed, it just vibrates.
It's not too bad when it is open, just makes a clanging sound when you close the door.
Billy thanks. I have a 2002 Mazda 6 TS2 in very good condition. I have heard that they DO US|E Ford parts, yes.

    • ANSWER:

  2. QUESTION:
what is the cause of my electric car windows not rolling up or down?
the windows rolled down fine this morning but when i reached my destination they wouldnt roll up. all four of them!

    • ANSWER:
      Could be several things:
      1. A bad fuse or a short in the electrical system. (Sounds like the most logical problem, since all four windows wouldn't roll up.)
      2. The little electric motor has gone bad. (There's one for each window, so I doubt they'd just all happen to go bad at exactly the same moment.)
      3. The electric motor is fine and still turning, but the little wire/pulley thing has gone bad....either the wire has jumped the wheel, or else the wheel has crumbled. (Again, I doubt all four would go bad at the same exact moment.)

  3. QUESTION:
ok, all of you smart guys out there, how do you repair your electric car windows?
my electric car window came off of the track. i took off the door panal and think i figured out how to fix it, but i dont know what kind of stuff to use to put the window back on the track so that it stays.

    • ANSWER:
I'm guessing that you mean the "Glue in Track" that some car makers use; on the bottom of the glass to the window holder.

You can purchase that special glue at some auto parts stores, OR a windshield shop (it is NOT the normal glue they use for windshields however.
NOTE: I have heard of some using super glue made for glass & metal - but I have not tried / used that.

  4. QUESTION:
How do you wind an electric car window up?
The electric window to one side of the car has gone dead. It is now stuck in the down position but the other window side works fine though.

I checked both fuse locations inside the car and hood but none of them have fuses for the windows.

I've even checked the car manual and there's nothing about window fuses or how to get the darn thing up in situations like these.

I've even resorted to a pair of pliers to see if I could dislodge it. I'm all out of ideas - please help!

    • ANSWER:
If you can hear the elec. motor run when you try to put up the window , it has a broken window regulator. If you dont hear it run its more than likely it has a bad motor. Try to smack the door panel while someone holds the window switch in the up position, sometimes this will wake up a dead window motor.

  5. QUESTION:
anyone know about electric car windows?
i have basic mechanical knowledge and have door panel off. my window is stuck down and i need to get it up. any help is greatly appreciated.
it is a toyota camry. i have the switch box taken apart and there is a green led that is lit up. i really want to know how to just get it back up until i can get the parts to fix it.

    • ANSWER:
electirc window motors simply need 12 volts positive on one side and a good ground on the other. switching which side is which reverses the motor.
if the motor is good, you can quite easily run the window up with it. however, make sure to put a 10 amp fuse on that positive jumper wire just in case.

the msot common failure on power windows is the switch itself. just like breaker points, when a switch makes or breaks contact a spark jumps and pits away at the material of the switch.
