I think it has more to do with the Democrats pandering to the whims of environmentalist wackos. If this administration stays around for any length of time, their pundits will begin legislating penalties for any one still driving an all gasoline fuel vehicle. Its all about taking our freedoms away. These alternative fuel activists seem to also forget these cars have to be charged every night. This is going to drive up the demand and cost of electricity. Electricity, unless generated by a hydroelectric plant is produced from burning coal (Ooops, another carbon foot print). Perhaps we're seeing the birth of Big coal or Big electric power companies.

There's a lot the government can do to make electric cars more viable, including science grants for battery technology, infrastructure spending for recharging stations, tax incentives for companies that make electric cars and individuals who buy them. A single standard for battery recharging would go a long way.To make electric cars greener, the government could:
1. Impose "fuel economy" standards on electric cars.
2. Mandate battery recycling.
3. Craft environmental regulations for making batteries
4. Encourage power utilities to produce greener electricity.For power utilities, the best method is replacing the oldest and least efficient power plants. Some of our old coal plants make 13% thermal efficiency, compared to 60% efficiency for some of the newest plants. There's also a pressing need to improve the power distribution grid, over 10% of electricity produced is lost in transmission.
