If your home were set up for solar-electric generation, you could use your home's electricity to charge your car's batteries. If your home is near a hydroelectric dam or a wind power generation area, then you're much greener than the rest of the coal fired electric areas.

I know everyone hates mechanics and casts them out as charlatan, trust me I know how to work on my own car I have been working on cars for 20 years now. Even I sometimes want to take my car to a mechanic. But to answer your question the Utopia that you speak of will never happen because even now the car company's have realized the value of "planned obsolesces". Car company's can make a car last longer, but why would they? We as people get tired and want the newest and best comfort features available. Can you live with the same car for 60 years? Things will always break on a car because of the biggest flaw in the design, it still requires a human to drive it.
