I had a 2007 Toyota Camry hybrid and it had fine acceleration. 0-60 times were 7.6 to 7.7 seconds according to the car magazines. Quarter mile in well under 16 seconds. That is not a slow car in my book. By comparison, the regular Camry 4 cylinder takes about 8.5 seconds to 60. And an Altima hybrid will go 0-60 in around 7.1 seconds. I don't have the car now because I was rear ended by a Chevy pick up that drove my tail lights into the back seat. I walked away from this accident. Excellent crumple zones.

The Honda Accord hybrid has good acceleration. It has a v6 engine and when you drive in the city, it switches over to battery mode to save gas for you.

Basically, it's either the Honda Accord hybrid or the Lexus hybrid. Maybe you should check them both out and make up your mind then.

The 2005+ Prius is the way to go. Test drive one. The older ones are a bit underpowered but will still get up and go better than other hybrids of it's day.

If you want an SUV...the Escape is a better hybrid thatn the Prius IMHO but it's a larger vehicle and you mentioned "car".
The Escape Hybrid also has great pickup. The 2009 is better then the 2008 even though they look the same, the motor was changed. Better mileage and power.

I wouldn't waste my money on a partial- or -electric assist hybrid. You will be disappointed and spend alot of $ for nothing. The Civic hybrid is also an underpowered letdown.

You could also buy a Chevy Volt. That will be the fastest.

Overall to get the best gas mileage you should put the pedal to the floor....get up to seppd....let off and back on the gas to maintain speed ( set your cruise too)

This also will lead you to being able to driving faster than everyone else and your engine dosn't have to do a ton of work...your batteries take a huge chunk of the load off the line.

Since driving fast = better gas mileage...I have to say that Hybrids are kinda "faster" than regular cars because you get better mileage when you get up and go off the line and your going....well, FASTER.

It may not feel as fast because of the CVT (you can google about that if you don't know what it is) but it provides better and smoother takeoffs.

I loved my hybrid for 160,000 miles. :)

The Prius and the Camry have the same technology, so the Prius isn't the way to go.
I drive a 2007 Prius and I did not buy it for the acceleration.
You will find the same issue with the Ford Escape Hybrid.

There are a couple of vehicles that are considered 'hybrids', but don't have the same technology as the Camry and Prius.

For example, the Chevy Malibu Hybrid and the Saturn Aura Hybrid are just as quick as the 4-cylinder versions of the vehicles, but they don't switch to battery mode while you are driving. These 'hybrids' only cut the engine when you are sitting at a stop light or stuck in traffic.
Plus, they are about $4,000+ more expensive for only about a 2 mpg increase in mileage per gallon. Not worth it.

In my opinion, if you can't deal with the lack of acceleration, then a hybrid vehicle is not for you right now.
There are some future models that will be better, but Toyota and Ford are way ahead of the curve on the Hybrids right now.
