What is the difference between a 4WD SUV and a 4×4?
Is there any difference? I called a rental car to rent a 4WD SUV and they said,"Do you mean a 4×4?" I thought they were the same thing.
Also, bonus points to someone who can tell me what the numbers signify. I know one of them tells you if it is a 2WD or 4WD, but what’s the other number for?

I’d say they’re the same thing, but then again a 4X4 can also be a pickup truck as well as an SUV.
Then there’s all wheel drive (AWD), where all four wheels have power and cannot shift between 4X4 and 4X2 mode.
So, to answer the other question, the first number is total # of wheels, and the second is how many wheels have power. Another example is a 6X4 ATV, which has two axles in the back, powering a total of 4 wheels, then two non-powered wheels in the front for steering.
