When will there be a plug in hybrid vehicle on the market in the US, and why don't we have them already?

You’d think that a 100mpg vehicle would be everywhere by now with all this gas price hysteria. I hear that you can convert a prius to be a plugin hybrid, but apparently its not that affordable right now.

What maintenance is required on a hybrid vehicle?

I am thinking about buying a Toyota Prius but I am concerned about hidden costs and other inconveniences. What is required to keep a Prius vehicle running on a daily basis, and is the maintence schedule more rigorous than it would be for a regular vehicle?
